New in Barcelona? Welcome! In this article you will find all important information about what you need to know about NIE when arriving to Barcelona.

What is NIE?

First thing which you need in case you are planning to stay in beautiful Barcelona longer that 3 months is a NIE number.


The Spanish NIEnumber is a shortcut for Número de Identificación de Extranjero which means Foreigner Identification Number. It is issued by the Administración General del Estado (General Administration of the State) as an identification number for foreigners.


What is NIE for?

A NIE number is necessary for any kind of economic transaction like opening a bank account, getting internet/phone contracts, setting up a company, buying or renting a real estate property or a car, any kind of paperwork.


Which documentation is necessary to apply for a NIE number in Spain?


For getting your NIE number you will need:

  • The official NIE application form (EX-15 / 18)

  • Proof of address in Spain – your rental contract

  • Proof of health insurance

  • Identity document or Passport, original and photocopy of all pages

  • A document certifying the reason to be applying for a NIE

  • €12 for NIE fee


How to get your NIE

Step-By-Step



1. Fill in the application form

For the EU citizens

the Spanish NIE application form is called EX – 18 - Solicitud de inscripción en el Registro Central de Extranjeros_Residencia Ciudadano de la UE. You can download it here.


You will also need the Modelo 790-012 which MUST be filled in online, printed and brought to the appointment. You will then have to pay for the NIE at a nearby bank.


For NON-EU citizens

The form is called EX-15 - Solicitud de Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE) y Certificados. Click here to download the form.


You will find both forms in Spanish.

2. Make an appointment


As an EU citizen You can apply for the NIE at your local Oficina de Extranjeros (Foreigners Office). Click here to see the List of offices in Catalunya.


However, in order to be served, first you have to make an online appointment before going to the Foreign Office in person. As there is a limited number of appointments given every week, it can be difficult to get one.

Therefore, for arranging the appointment, click here.

  • In PROVINCIAS DISPONIBLES select Barcelona.

  • In TRÁMITES DISPONIBLES PARA LA PROVINCIA SELECCIONADA choose Certificados UE (if you are from the European Union), or Expedición de tarjeta de identidad de extranjero (huella) for NON-EU citizens

  • Click Aceptar

  • Click Entrar

  • Fill in your information:

  • Choose PASAPORTE and enter your passport number below

  • Nombre y apellidos = name and surname

  • País de nacionalidad = your nationality

  • In Caracteres enter what you see on the picture above

  • Click Aceptar


Remember, you MUST print your appointment confirmation document and bring it with you on the day of the appointment.


3. Prepare and bring all necessary documents


For EU citizens
  • Original Passport and it´s copy

  • Proof of address in Spain – your rental contract

  • Completed EX-18 form

  • Completed Modelo 790

  • Proof of health insurance – this can be private health insurance or an EHIC card

  • Enough to pay the NIE fee of €12

  • Document* proving why you need a Spanish NIE number, which differs depending on your intentions. In most cases it is:

- contract showing that you’re going to buy a property in Spain like real estate, car, etc.

- employed: job contract from the Spanish company

- self-employed: a company ownership certificate

- proof that you can live in Spain without working (persons with sufficient funds)

- students: acceptance letter from the school plus proof of payment to the school

- job seekers: you can go only with passport, but you will be issued a temporary NIE number valid only for 3 months


*Any documents must be translated into Spanish or Catalan (unless they are official EU documents) and you must bring the original document as well.


For Non-EU citizens
  • Passport, Visa and copies

  • Completed EX-15 form

  • Empadronamiento – you will need to go to the town hall and register yourself as living in the area

  • Non-EU citizens will need the additional proof of legal entry into Spain (for instance a landing card, known in Spanish as a declaración de entrada)

  • Proof of health insurance

  • Two passport size photos (check as this can vary from country to country – the Spanish size is called carnet)

  • Document* proving why you need a Spanish NIE number. In most cases it is:

- a contract showing that you’re going to buy a property in Spain like real estate, car, etc.

- employed: job contract from the Spanish company

- self-employed: a company ownership certificate

- persons with sufficient funds: proof that you have enough funds to live in Spain without working

- students: acceptance letter from the school plus proof of payment to the school

- job seekers: you can go only with passport, but you will be issued a temporary NIE number valid only for 3 months


*Any documents must be translated into Spanish or Catalan and you must bring the original.


4. Wait to receive your NIE

All EU citizens will receive their NIE the same day.
Meanwhile the NON-EU citizens will have to wait around 2 weeks.

After submitting all necessary documents you will be given a paper indicating when the card is available. Remember to keep this document hence you will need to show it to them later when you pick up your NIE card.
